Chocolate Blood Orange Waffles
Do waffles just have to be for breakfast? In my house, that answer is NO! In fact, we use our waffle iron to make savor waffles which make the perfect vehicle for cheeses, chutneys, and a host of creative toppings. This waffle recipe makes for a delicious dessert (or breakfast). Give it a try.
Ingredient Spotlight. Our Whole Fruit Blood Orange Infused Olive Oil is crushed with fresh blood oranges for a bright, fragrant citrus note that sings against dark cocoa. It keeps these waffles tender and adds a luscious orange-and-chocolate finish in every bite.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 tsp. Baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 cup good quality cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup date sugar
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 large eggs
- 4 Tbs. North Conway Whole Fruit Blood Orange (Infused) Olive Oil
Instructions
- Preheat the waffle iron.
- Mix together to dry ingredients in a large bowl.
- Whisk the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl and add to the dry ingredients, mixing gently until no spots of dry ingredients are visible.
- Use batter immediately in a greased, preheated waffle iron.
Chef's Notes
- Fold the wet and dry together gently and stop as soon as the dry spots disappear. A few lumps are fine, and overmixing is what makes waffles tough.
- Use the batter right away in a hot, well-greased iron so the baking powder gives you the lightest, crispest waffles.
Make It Yours
- Finish with a drizzle of our Black Cherry Dark Balsamic for a chocolate-covered-cherry dessert waffle.
- Swap the Blood Orange oil for our Persian Lime Olive Oil when you want a zesty, lime-forward twist.
Allergens: Contains gluten (wheat), egg, and dairy (yogurt).
Serve warm waffles with fresh fruit or with topping of your choice. Enjoy!
